What to do before having a yard sale

There is a lot of work that goes into having a yard sale, I am actually getting ready to have one myself. I figured I would share some of my pre-sale ideas with you:1. Advertise on Craigslist (it’s free) the newspaper is also good, but their prices haven gotten out of control!
I like to place an ad on Craigslist 5 days before, 3 days before and than the day before, just to make sure people don’t miss it. I only list my street name,( not the house number) and I write “look for signs” that way you don’t have people showing up at 6am or if it rains and you decide to cancel, you easily can, with no one hassling you.

2. Make sure you have plenty of tables. there is nothing worse than going to a garage sale and everything is laid out of blankets. Everything looks better on a table.
I call my local rental company and rent a few 8 foot tables, they also rent out tablecloths ( for a small fee) it’s so worth it, presentation is everything.
I also spend the money and rent coat racks , if i have a ton of clothes, they sell much better when they are on a hanger.

3. Start pricing stuff a few days before, this can be very time consuming, but there is nothing worse than going to a garage sale and asking a million times “how much is this?”.
Plus when your busy with customers, it’s hard to price a price up when you can’t really think about it.

4. Make up lots of signs! The dollar store sells neon poster board for 1.00 each, stick with the same color signs, so that people will know it’s your sale.
Instead of buying pricey markers for your signs, I use colored tape, its so much easier and you don’t have to worry about your markers drying out.

5. Make sure you display your items nice. People are more likely to buy more, if your stuff is displayed nicely.
Group things together, that make sense. EX: all toys in one area, clothes in one area etc.

6.Hang signs the morning of the sale, that way you won’t have to worry about them blowing down, or getting that “morning dew” on them.

7. Set up a “pay station” a place where the customer comes to pay you, have your money box there, filled with singles and change (your first customer WILL give you a 20 dollar bill) lots of bags, and newspaper to wrap the fragile stuff.
Also the customer can put stuff down, and let you figure out the total.

8. Park your car across your driveway and block people from pulling in, this can be a headache when 20 people are all trying to pull in and turn around, and drive on your lawn etc.

9. If you know the date your having your sale, I always contact¬†www.scheduleapickup.com¬†and have them come the monday after the sale, to pick up all the junk I did’t sell. The money goes to the Vietnam Veterans of America, and they come right to your door, and they pick up EVERYTHING!
This way I don’t have to lug a ton of stuff in my car and go take somewhere to donate. So easy!!

10. Last but not least, if you have small children, let them set up a lemonade stand, this gives them something to do, and makes them feel included. My girls are young, so I made a sign that said “Free Lemonade, tips accepted”. This way people pay whatever they want, and my kids don’t have to worry about making change.

I hope this helped, good luck with your next sale, if I left anything out, or you have a great tip, PLEASE leave me a comment!! I am always looking for ways to make my sale even better and make more $$$ xoxo GSG
